Jeffrey Masson was a Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Toronto until 1970 when he decided to apply for training as a psychoanalyst. In 1978 he graduated from the Toronto Psychoanalytic Institute as a Freudian analyst and moved to California with the intention of setting up his own psychoanalytic practice.
Instead Masson went to Munich to learn to speak German and do research on the originator of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. Masson began to enjoy real success as a writer with his books about animals.
