Jones was born in Buffalo, New York, to Douglas Bennett Jones, who died while he was a child, and Ruth, who encouraged him to pursue an acting career. Jones is best known for his portrayal of the crazed high school dean of students, Edward R. Rooney, in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
He also appeared in Amadeus, Howard the Duck, Beetlejuice, Mom and Dad Save the World, The Pest, The Devil's Advocate, Out On A Limb, where he played murderous psychopathic twins alongside Matthew Broderick, The Hunt for Red October, Sleepy Hollow, Houseguest, Ed Wood, The Cruci (1986).
