Jeffrey Gibson Biography

Jeffrey Gibson is a Choctaw-Cherokee painter and sculptor of modern American origin. He is well-known for his paintings that mix traditional Native American art components with contemporary creative influences. Gibson frequently incorporates traditional Indigenous handicraft methods, such as Southeastern river cane basket weaving, Algonquian birch bark biting, and porcupine quillwork, into his work. Indigenous crafts and patterns, according to the artist, have "historically been utilized to identify identification, tell tales, characterize place, and mark cultural distinctiveness." I use materials and procedures as tactics to construct a current story that tackles the past in order to situate oneself in the present and establish new potential future trajectories.” One of Gibson's most well-known series is punching bags turned into beautiful totems. Gibson was born in Colorado in 1972, and his family traveled frequently throughout his youth, which influenced his cross-cultural style. In 1998, he received his BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA from the Royal College of Arts. Gibson has been included in my solo and group exhibits, including the 2019 Whitney Biennale and his 2019 solo show, The Anthropophagic Effect, at the New Museum in New York. He is a resident artist and lecturer at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Gibson currently resides and works in Hudson, New York.
