Jeff Smith ran for the U.S. Congressional seat left vacant by Dick Gephardt in 2004 and came within a whisker of beating Republican Russ Carnahan. Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore? an award-winning documentary chronicled his inspiring but ultimately fruitless effort. Smith campaigned for the Missouri State Senate a year later and won in a closely contested race.
He swiftly rose to prominence in the legislature, concentrating on issues such as education reform and tax credits, among others. In 2009, however, the FBI launched a criminal inquiry into whether Smith lied about a campaign finance violation in 2004. He eventually pleaded guilty and served a year in prison. He shared the anecdote on This American Life.
