He swiftly rose to prominence in the legislature, concentrating on issues such as education reform and tax credits, among others. In 2009, however, the FBI launched a criminal inquiry into whether Smith lied about a campaign finance violation in 2004. He eventually pleaded guilty and served a year in prison.
