Jeff Ryan Biography

Jeff Ryan was born in Maine and reared there. His love of the outdoors was obvious from an early age (his first memory is sitting under a backyard maple tree at the age of two and being fascinated by the movement of the summer leaves above). Jeff began skiing at the age of three and by the age of twelve, he was spending at least some summer nights in a canvas pup tent at the edge of the woods. Aboard his early adolescence, he spent two weeks every summer in his parents' 24 foot powerboat exploring the inlets and islands of the Maine coast. Jeff's preferred form of discovery as an adult was hiking. In 1983, he embarked on his first long-distance trek, a six-and-a-half-month journey along the Pacific Crest Trail. Jeff continued trekking after returning to Maine from the PCT. In one year, he and a hiking buddy climbed all 50 of Maine's tallest mountains. In 1985, he began “section hiking” the Appalachian Trail (a quest that would take 28 years to complete and resulted in his first book, Appalachian Odyssey: A 28-Year Hike on America's Trail). Jeff is a popular public speaker who likes motivating folks to get outside and appreciate all that nature has to offer for our mental and physical wellness.
