About Jeff Lowenfels

Jeff Lowenfels Biography

Author of the Teaming Series, which includes Teaming With Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide To The Soil Food Web, Teaming With Nutrients: The Organic Gardener's Guide to Optimizing Plant Nutrition, and Teaming With Fungi: The Organic Growers Guide to Mycorrhizae, as well as DIY Autoflowering Cannabis: A New Way To Grow. Jeff Lowenfels is the most amusing and engaging cannabis and horticulture educator. He is a reformed lawyer and the author of Timber Press' award-winning and best-selling books, Teaming With Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to The Soil Food Web, Teaming With Nutrients: The Organic Gardener's Guide to Optimizing Plant Nutrition, and Teaming With Fungi, The Organic Grower's Guide to Mycorrhizae, which completes the trilogy. Cannabis producers have embraced these foundational publications, which have become "must-read" bibles. DIY Autoflowering Cannabis, his most recent book, was released in 2019 by New Society Publishers. It defines a new type of cannabis that is ideal for this period of legalization. According to Lowenfels, it will be the next tomato. Lowenfels also writes the longest-running garden column in North America, with no missed weeks in over 40 years. He acquired the title "America's Dirtiest Lawyer" for his blend of garden writing and law. The Teaming Trilogy raises him to the title of "Lord of The Roots." Jeff is also a well-known and well-respected national garden writer. He is a past President of the Garden Writers of America, a GWA Fellow, and was inducted into the GWA Hall of Fame in 2005, the greatest award bestowed upon a garden writer. As a result of his best-selling books, Jeff Lowenfels has emerged as a leader in the organic movement. He is widely credited for pioneering both regenerative and no-till agriculture. Tens of thousands of gardeners and farmers have been converted by his speeches at locations across North and South America. It's easy to see why: Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to The Soil Food Web was dubbed "the most significant new gardening book in 25 years, if not ever." It is currently available in a Revised Edition and has been translated into 11 other languages. Jeff grew raised on his father's hobby farm in Scarsdale, New York, as an indentured servant. He was compelled to cultivate, weed, mow, and harvest fruits, flowers, and vegetables on an 8-acre "gentleman's farm," which had acres-wide vegetable gardens, a Versailles-style formal flower garden, a 100-tree fruit orchard, and many landscaping shrubs, lawns, and ornamental beds. He escaped to Harvard College, where he studied in Geology and attended Harvard University. He was held up and shot one day in the early 1970s while attending law school. As a result, he fled as far as he could without a passport, eventually landing in Anchorage, Alaska. There, he has been able to turn his labor-intensive upbringing into a meaningful and pleasurable pastime and avocation. Jeff Lowenfels hosted the most popular show on Alaska public television, "Alaska Gardens with Jeff Lowenfels." The show was so popular that it broadcast four times a week, even in Barrow, well above the Arctic Circle. He also had a famous weekly garden radio show until his hectic travel schedule of teaching all over the world caught up with him. Most importantly, Jeff is the originator of a now-national initiative that began as "Plant a Row for Bean's," an Anchorage soup kitchen, and has since evolved into "Plant A Row for The Hungry." Every year, millions of pounds of garden food are given to feed the poor through the program, which is active in all 50 states and Canada. Jeff is just as enthusiastic about “Plant a Row” as he is about organics. He urges gardeners to engage in the program wherever he travels and continually reminds his fellow garden communicators of the critical need to tackle the hunger crisis.
