About Jeff Hornacek
Jeff Hornacek Biography
Hornacek, a basketball lifer and the son of a coach, spent most of his 14-year professional career under legendary NBA coaches Cotton Fitzsimmons, the league's 14th-winningest coach, and Jerry Sloan, the league's third-winningest coach. Hornacek comes to the Suns after spending the previous three campaigns as an assistant head coach with the Utah Jazz (2010-13). Prior to his time on the bench, he spent three seasons as the team's shooting coach, commencing with the 2007 NBA Playoffs (2007-10). Hornacek's Basketball career comes full circle when he takes over the Suns, the team that chose him 46th overall (second round) in the 1986 NBA Draft. Hornacek, a fan favorite, played 468 games with the Phoenix Suns from 1986 to 1992, averaging 13.7 points per game, including a career-high 20.1 points in his final season before being sold to the Philadelphia 76ers in the blockbuster transaction that brought the Suns Charles Barkley in the summer of 1992. In total, the 1992 NBA All-Star scored 14.5 points per game in 1,077 games with the Suns, Sixers (1993-94), and Utah Jazz (1994-00), appearing in 11 postseason games in 14 seasons. During that time, the former Iowa State walk-on created himself as one of the NBA's top shooters, ending his career with a 49.6 percent overall shooting percentage, 40.3 % from three-point range, and 87.7 percent from the free-throw line, which still ranks 14th in NBA history 13 years later. At All-Star Weekend, he won the league's Three-Point Shootout twice (1998, 2000). Hornacek, a native of Elmhurst, Illinois, went from being a walk-on to being named to the Big Eight All-First Team as a senior, leading the Cyclones to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and breaking a school record for career points. He was only the fourth athlete in program history to have his number retired when he did so in 1991. Hornacek's jersey was likewise retired by the Jazz in 2002. Hornacek lives in Phoenix with his wife, Stacy, and their three children, Ryan, Tyler, and Abby. Ryan is a Notre Dame graduate, Tyler is a University of Southern California grad student, and Abby is now a USC student. Aaron Nelson, the Suns' head athletic trainer, is his brother-in-law.
