His first ambition was to follow in his father's footsteps and become a musician. Then he decided for a brief period that he wanted to be a radio announcer, but he eventually got his acting degree. He had the choice of pursuing a career in athletics or acting because of his height of 6' 3". Jed chose to pursue a career as an actor and began performing in Washington, D.C., in 1958. In the same year, he married Toby, an interior designer. In 1961, he returned to New York and appeared in various Broadway plays. He already had a family with him when he left the east coast for Hollywood in 1967: his wife had given birth to three kids. Mitch (actor, 1960), Dean (lawyer, 1963), and Rick (actor, 1960).
