Jean Pfaelzer Biography

Jean Pfaelzer is an English, Asian Studies, Women's Studies, and American Studies professor at the University of Delaware. Driven Out: The Forgotten War Against Chinese Americans (Random House; University of California Press), as well as Parlor Radical: Rebecca Harding Davis and the Origins of American Social Realism, The Utopian Novel in America, and two critical editions, are among her works. She worked as the Executive Director of the National Labor Law Center and as a Senior Legislative Analyst for the late Congressman Frank McCloskey, D-Indiana, on labor, immigration, and women's issues. Among other things, Ms. Pfaelzer curated the exhibit "Chinese American Women: a History of Resistance and Resilience" for the National Women's History Museum. She is now working on a show called "California: A Slave State." She also developed and co-produced a PBS/KEET documentary about the Chinese Experience in Humboldt County. Ms. Pfaelzer has appeared on NPR, Pacifica, and independent stations around the country to discuss immigration, labor, and Chinese Americans. She has given talks at the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. She has also published over 30 papers in the fields of nineteenth-century American literature, women's literature, feminist theory, utopian fiction, and cultural theory. Ms. Pfaelzer served as Chair of the American Studies Association International Women's Task Force, is a member of the International Committee, and has previously served on the American Studies Association Women's Committee. She was appointed to the Commission for Women in Washington, D.C., and worked as a consultant for the Coal Employment Project, an organization of female coal miners. Ms. Pfaelzer holds a Ph.D. from University College, London, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Literature and Society from Cambridge University and a B.A. and M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
