Jean-Michel Cousteau, the son of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, has spent much of his life exploring the world's waters aboard the Calypso and Alcyone. Jean-Michel created Ocean Futures Society in 1999 to continue on this pioneering effort in honor of his ancestors. Jean-Michel travels the world as Chairman of the Board and President of Ocean Futures Society, a non-profit marine conservation and education organization, engaging with leaders and policymakers at all levels of government and business. He is committed to teaching young people, recording tales of transformation and optimism, and offering his profile and assistance to ignite positive change partnerships. As the Ocean Futures Society's representative, Jean-Michel acts as an ardent environmental ambassador, reaching out to the public through a range of media and educational initiatives. In May 2016, Jean-Michel was awarded the highest French civilian order of distinction, the Chevalier de la Légion D'Honneur, Knight of the Legion of Honor, by President of France, François Hollande, for his lifetime achievements and exemplary public service in ocean conservation through education, awareness, and diplomacy. Jean-Michel has produced over 80 films and has won the Emmy, Peabody Award, Sept d'Or, and Cable Ace Award. He became a syndicated writer for the Los Angeles Times in 1989, and his pieces appeared in over sixty newspapers throughout the world. Jean-Michel continues to produce environmentally oriented adventure programs and television specials, public service announcements, multi-media programs for schools, web-based marine content, books, magazine articles, newspaper columns, and public lectures, reaching millions of people worldwide through Ocean Futures Society. His most recent project, an IMAX picture titled "Secret Ocean 3D," was released in 2015 and showed in over fifty cinemas worldwide. Jean-campaign Michel's to conserve the Northwest Hawaiian Islands brought him to the White House in 2006, where he showed President George W. Bush his PBS-KQED documentary, Voyage to Kure. The President was moved, and in June 2006, he designated the 1,200-mile chain of islands as a Maritime National Monument, creating one of the world's biggest marine protected areas at the time. Jean-Michel has a long history of creative design in architecture and the ocean. He sought a degree in architecture from the Paris School of Architecture in order to fulfill a childhood ambition of building cities beneath the sea, and he is still a member of the Ordre National des Architectes. Among his initiatives are artificial floating islands, schools, and an advanced marine studies center in Marseilles, France. Among Jean-various Michel's honors are: Jean-Michel has received a slew of honors for his achievements, including: In 1976, Jean-Michel received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Pepperdine University. He was inducted into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2008, he won the Jules Verne Adventures Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the National Marine Sanctuaries Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Jean-Michel was named Ambassador-Global Cities Covenant on Climate-Mexico City Pact in 2012, and he earned the Surf Industry Manufacture Association's Environmental Hero award. Jean-Michel also earned the World Business Academy's Environmental Academy Award in 2016.
