J. D. Brookhart is the head coach of the Akron Zips football team and was previously a coach for the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Panthers. He was born on October 17, 1964, in Pueblo, Colorado. He began his collegiate football career as a freshman walk-on at Brigham Young University before moving to Colorado State University.
On December 15, 2003, he was named the 25th head coach at Akron, and the third since the program's promotion to Division I-A status in 1987. He guided the squad to their first MAC conference championship and bowl game in school history in only his second season.
