On February 13, 1956, Jeremiah Wilson "Jay" Nixon was born. He was the 55th Governor of Missouri from 2009 to 2017, and is an American politician and lawyer. He was first elected to the governorship in 2008 and reelected in 2012. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to becoming Governor of Missouri, he served as the state's Attorney General for 40 years, from 1993 to 2009. He joined the Dowd Bennett law firm in St. Louis after leaving public service. He will be the last Democrat to serve as Governor of Missouri until 2021. Nixon founded the Environmental Protection Division as Attorney General of Missouri to administer the state's environmental laws. Attorneys in this division seek legal measures to protect Missouri's agricultural rights and to prevent contamination of the state's air, water, and soil. The division's successful lawsuit has resulted in the cleanup of contaminated areas and the payment of millions of dollars to the state. His aggressive behavior as Attorney General garnered him media attention. He was named one of the top 20 young lawyers in the country by Barrister magazine, and he was named one of Missouri's Ten Outstanding Young Missourians by the Missouri Jaycees. He was honored by the Conservation Federation of Missouri for his environmental service as a state senator before becoming Attorney General. He teamed up with nine mayors in 2013 to declare July 15 as Social Media Giving Day, urging people to donate to charity via social media.
