Jay Coakley is professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. His book Sports in Society: Issues and Controversies will soon be in its eleventh edition with regional versions published in several countries and translations. Coakley currently is a visiting professor of sport development and management at the University of Chichester in the UK.
He also works in Brazil as part of a research group studying legacy issues in connection with the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; and he is the recipient of a three-year international cooperation grant to do a comparative study of sport and national identity in Slovenia and the United States.
