He began his career in documentaries and political advertising in the 1970s. He has had a significant cooperation with Sean Penn, having edited all of Penn's films. Cassidy began his career editing Charles Guggenheim's documentary film High Schools (1984); more recently, he has edited many films by Guggenheim's son Davis Guggenheim, including An Inconvenient Truth (2006).

Cassidy was nominated for an Academy Award for Film Editing as well as an ACE Eddie Award for his work on Into the Wild (directed by Sean Penn - 2007). Silver Linings Playbook earned him his second Academy Award nomination for Film Editing in 2012.
