Javier Zamora is a Salvadoran-American poet and activist. Fleeing the Salvadoran Civil War, his parents migrated to California, leaving him with grandparents until he journeyed alone at nine through Guatemala, Mexico, and the Sonoran Desert to reunite with them. His debut poetry collection, “Unaccompanied” (2017), and memoir, “Solito” (2022), a New York Times bestseller, vividly recount this harrowing migration.
Zamora’s work, written in English, Spanish, and Salvadoran Caliche, appears in Poetry, The New York Times, and Ploughshares. A UC Berkeley B.A. and NYU MFA graduate, he has held fellowships from Stanford, Harvard, and the NEA. Co-founder of the Undocupoets campaign, he advocates for immigrant voices. His honors include a 2024 Whiting Fellowship and the 2022 LA Times-Christopher Isherwood Prize.
