Born in Boston Gay grew up in the nearby suburb of Belmont Mass. where he had a forgettable career in baseball basketball cross country and tennis. His father Ward Gay just completed his 40th season as the boys' tennis coach at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School in Cambridge Mass. Gay also competed as an amateur bike racer and has finished dead last in races from Brooklyn N.Y. to Oregon and Rwanda.
