Janina Fels Biography

Since October 2012, Janina Fels has been a professor of Medical Acoustics at RWTH Aachen University. She earned her diploma in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Electrical Communication Engineering from RWTH Aachen University and her doctorate from the Institute of Technical Acoustics there (PhD in 2008). Her dissertation used measurement and modeling techniques to investigate the evolution of binaural hearing and ear canal impedances from toddlers to adults. Since January 2008, she has been in charge of the study group Medical Acoustics, Binaural Technology, Spatial Audio, Audiology, and Psychoacoustics at RWTH Aachen University's Institute for Technical Acoustics. In 2009, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Applied Hearing Research (CAHR) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Widex, Denmark, on the further development of ear simulators for children for the development of hearing aids. She worked as a Guest Researcher at the Forschungszentrum Jülich's Institut für Neurowissenschaften und Medizin, strukturelle und funktionelle Organisation (INM-1) from December 2012 to October 2015. In March 2013, she received the Lothar-Cremer-Prize from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Akustik (German Society for Acoustics) for her unique and breakthrough work in binaural technology and medical acoustics. In January 2014, she was appointed to the Nordrhein-Westfälischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste's Junge Kolleg (Young Scholars' College of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities, and Arts).
