Janice H. Hammond Biography

Jesse Philips Professor of Manufacturing Janice H. Hammond is a Harvard Business School professor. She is now a Technology and Operations Management instructor in the HBS MBA program. She is also the faculty chair of the HBS MBA Pre-matriculation Analytics Program, as well as the program chair of the HBS Executive Education International Women's Foundation and Women's Leadership Programs. Professor Hammond has previously taught courses in Supply Chain Management, Business Logistics and After-Sales Service, Decision Support Systems, Quantitative Methods, and Managerial Economics in the MBA program, as well as Managing the Supply Chain, Manufacturing in Corporate Strategy, Retailing, and Managing Orgs in HBS Executive Education. She has held the positions of Senior Associate Dean, Director of Faculty Planning, Unit Head for the Technology and Operations Management Unit, Course Head for the Required Technology and Operations Management Course, and Faculty Chair of the Harvard MBA Program's January Cohort. Professor Hammond's current research focuses on the development of speed and flexibility in manufacturing and logistics systems, especially how these systems develop the qualities required to adapt swiftly and effectively to changing consumer demand. An essential component is how coordinating mechanisms inside companies and along supply chains impact the capacity of those channels to compete. Much of her work, in particular, focuses on the interface between industrial and retail companies. A component of this research was done in the textile and garment sectors as part of an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation industrial competitiveness grant. A Stitch in Time: Lean Retailing and the Transformation of Manufacturing — Lessons from the Textile and Apparel Industries, co-authored by Fred Abernathy, John Dunlop, and David Weil, was published by Oxford University Press. Professor Hammond is working in the subject of e-learning. She has finished two online learning courses: a worldwide supply chain management simulation and a twenty-hour quantities analysis course. Professor Hammond graduated from Brown University with a Sc.B. in Applied Mathematics and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Ph.D. in Operations Research. Professor Hammond has written extensively on logistics and channel coordination. She advises and teaches for a number of large multinational businesses.
