Among which were the coverage of 911 (including a major role in the New York Times' prize winning Portraits in Grief'')and also its award winning series Children of the Shadows, the riots surrounding the Rodney King verdict, the early days of the AIDs epidemic, the advent of crack cocaine, the explosion of autism, the last major earthquakes in Los Angeles and San Francisco; and all of these led to six Pulitzer Prize nominations and many other notable awards. During her years as an author writing about aging in print, for her blog and her book, all the nation's leading professionals in her field were her reliable sources of information. She is regularly consulted to be the voice of reason at respected forums and panels funded by groups such as the New York State chapter of the Geriatric Care Managers Association, the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, the AARP Public Policy Institute and the Center for American Progress think tank. Early in her career, While covering sports at the beginning of her career, she was among a few women who were the first women allowed in male locker rooms and she was described in a piece in one of Roger Angel’s compilations in the New Yorker magazine. Her personal tasks in those years included the coverage of great tennis rivalries including Jimmy Connors vs John McEnroe and Chris Evert vs Martina Navratilova, famous Knicks basketball teams of the 1970s, the emergence of Renee Richards (nee Richard Raskin) as a transsexual tennis player and the George Steinbrenner-Billy Martin-Reggie Jackson Yankees. Milton Gross, her late father was a nationally associated sports columnist for The New York Post. Her childhood was spent in the unique atmosphere of bigtime sport shots in NYC in the 1950s and 1960s, in press boxes, at major heavyweight boxing matches and at spring training.
