James Ponsoldt is an American film director producer and writer. He was raised in Athens Georgia. He received a bachelor's degree from Yale and received an MFA in directing from Columbia University. He directed the short films Coming Down the Mountain (2003) and Junebug and Hurricane (2004) before making his first feature Off the Black (2006).
His second feature film is Smashed (2012) which received a Sundance Film award nomination. He also directed the award-winning film The Spectacular Now starring Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller. Most recently he directed the film The End of the Tour starring Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg.
