James Meredith is a hero of the United States of America. He enrolled in the United States Air Force after graduating from high school and climbed to the rank of staff sergeant. He was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi in 1933. He opted to continue his schooling and pursue a law degree before being discharged in July 1960.
After enrolling at Jackson State University, a historically Black college in Mississippi, he petitioned for admission to the University of Mississippi, launching him into the long and arduous fight he chronicles in his novels. He did political science research at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research at the University of Ibadan after graduating in 1963.
