He was born in New York City and grew up in La Jolla CA. His parents placed him in the San Diego Children's Choir where he started training as a singer.
At just 10 years old James landed a minor role in the San Diego Opera's production of La boheme. By 14 he had his own agent and performed as Marius in Les miserables. In 2007 James graduated from the Coronado School of the Arts in the musical theater department.
