Saint Peter's High School was his alma mater. Power spent four years as a line officer aboard a Coast Guard icebreaker in the Arctic and Antarctic after graduating from College of the Holy Cross in 1953. He went on to acquire a Finance MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
He began his career with Ford Motor Company as a financial analyst before moving on to Marplan as a marketing research consultant for GM's Buick and GMC truck and coach divisions. Power worked as a marketing research executive for J.I.
