Two of his partly dubbed 'ghetto' albums, released in 2001 and 2002, were on the edge of reaching #1 on the Billboard 200 list in the United States, but Jaheim's third album, "Ghetto Classics," snatched the top spot on February 24, 2006. The previous week's frontrunner, Jack Johnson's soundtrack CD "Curious George," was knocked down by "Ghetto Classics," which sold over 152,000 units in its first week. He was fortunate to collaborate with three outstanding producers for the R&B album, Scott Storch, KayGee, and Bink, and he also released the first song "Everytime I Think About Her," which featured rapper Jadakiss. The publication of his single "The Chosen One," as well as the filming of the video, were next on his schedule. He picked the song as the second single because, as he curiously stated, it was a homage to a significant woman in his life. Born Jaheim Hoagland in 1979, the African-American vocalist grew up in New Brunswick, New Jersey's public housing. Little Jah was fortunate to be born into such a loving family, but things changed dramatically when his father died in 1981, leaving Jah, his mother Julia Hoagland, and his younger brother Taquane drowning in... profound grief. Fortunately, because they had a large number of relatives, they depended on one another by gathering and singing. “Singing was my escape. I could always make myself and my mother feel better with a song, no matter how bad things were. “It was our salvation,” he said, recalling those heartbreaking times. The Hoaglands were extremely musical. In the 1960s, Jah's grandpa, Victor Hoagland, frequently performed for groups such as the legendary doo-wop band, The Drifters. That is how Jah received the vocal ability that propelled him to stardom at family reunions and local talent shows. With the support of his family, he continued to sing his heart out in those competitions before ultimately making it to one of the toughest talent events in the United States, the Apollo Theater. Jah was dubbed the "next Luther Vandross" after winning three times as a 15-year-old. His pleasant days were shattered when his mother died while he was only 17 years old. He refused to go into serious mourning, stating, "When I lost my Mom, I believed I lost everything." But I needed to be strong for my younger brother... Now I'm the one with the strength.”
