Jae Rhim Lee is a visual artist who also enjoys mushrooms. She designed systems that altered essential human activities in her early work as a Ph.D. student at MIT, such as sleeping (see out her it-just-might-work vertical bed from 2004), peeing, and eating (and the relationship between the two). Now she's working on a new strategy for the ultimate stage of the human life cycle: decay. Her Infinity Burial Project looks at the decisions we make after we die, and how those decisions represent our denial or acceptance of death's physical consequences. She's been working on a novel fungus called the Infinity Mushroom that feeds on and remediates the industrial poisons we retain in our bodies, as well as effectively converting our underused bodies into nutrition. Her Infinity Burial System turns dead bodies into compost.
