Jackson Kaguri Biography

Jackson Kaguri was born and reared in the tiny hamlet of Nyakagyezi in Uganda. He co-founded Human Rights Concerns to assist victims of human rights violations in Uganda and to educate the public about their rights. As a human rights champion, fundraiser, and motivational speaker, he has contributed significantly to worldwide community initiatives throughout the years. In reaction to the terrible impacts of AIDS in his community, Kaguri created The Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project in 2001. The charity, which recently marked its tenth anniversary, offers free education to children whose parents have died as a result of HIV/AIDS. It also runs a library, a desire farm and nutrition program, a medical clinic, a clean water system, and a support program for grandmothers who care for up to 14 children at a time. Kaguri has also become an author since launching the initiative. In "A School for My Village," he describes how he came to establish the first school and the challenges he experienced in the early years. Kaguri has been awarded a Heifer International Hero, has been featured in Time Magazine's "Power of One" Series, and has spoken before the United Nations on his efforts.
