Jack Shonkoff Biography

The founding Council Chair, Jack P. Shonkoff, M.D., is the Julius B. Richmond FAMRI Professor of Child Health and Development and Director of Harvard University's Center for the Developing Child. Dr. Shonkoff has received numerous professional honors, including election to the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine, election to the American Pediatric Society, designation as a National Associate of the National Academies, the American Academy of Pediatrics' C. Anderson Aldrich Award in Child Development, and the Award for Distinguished Contributions. Dr. Shonkoff chaired the Committee on Integrating the Science of Early Childhood Development for the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, which produced the landmark report From Neurons to Neighborhoods: The Science of Early Childhood Development, which was funded by the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Shonkoff has served on a number of professional networks and public interest advisory boards, including the MacArthur Research Network on Early Experience and Brain Development's core scientific group and the Society for Research in Child Development's Governing Council. He has over 130 publications to his credit, including nine books, and has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including Child Development and Infant Mental Health Journal. Dr. Shonkoff has lectured at 25 institutions in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Israel, Australia, and China as a visiting professor. He was the Samuel F. and Rose B. Gingold Professor of Human Development and Social Policy and Dean of Brandeis University's Heller School for Social Policy and Management before taking up his present role.
