Roush was born on April 19, 1942, in Covington, Kentucky, and grew up in Manchester, Ohio. He graduated from Berea College with a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a minor in physics, and from Eastern Michigan University with a master's degree in scientific mathematics.
After graduating in 1966, Jack Roush worked for Ford until 1970, when he left to start his own business. He worked for Chrysler for a year before teaming up with Wayne Gapp to compete in NHRA, IHRA, and AHRA drag races.
