He was a linebacker with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League. He is widely regarded as one of the best outside linebackers in NFL history. He went to Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and then Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Virginia, for his post-secondary education.
He was drafted in the second round of the 1971 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Penn State, where he was an All-American. As a rookie, he got the starting left linebacker spot. He was an All-Pro for seven years and was chosen to the Pro Bowl eight times in a row.
