Jerry J Boog” Afemata is a Samoan reggae singer who was born in Long Beach and reared in Compton, California. J Boog's enormous family has had a significant effect on his artwork, since he is steeped in Samoan culture and the son of a Samoan chief. He is the youngest of eight siblings (seven brothers and one sister).
One of his early musical influences, he says, was his sister. When she brought home a Bob Marley songbook, she began to play the piano and he began to sing along. Each sibling provided exposure to various genres, such as rap and R&B, giving J Boog the freedom to express himself.
