About J Boog

J Boog Biography

Jerry J Boog” Afemata is a Samoan reggae singer who was born in Long Beach and reared in Compton, California. J Boog's enormous family has had a significant effect on his artwork, since he is steeped in Samoan culture and the son of a Samoan chief. He is the youngest of eight siblings (seven brothers and one sister). One of his early musical influences, he says, was his sister. When she brought home a Bob Marley songbook, she began to play the piano and he began to sing along. Each sibling provided exposure to various genres, such as rap and R&B, giving J Boog the freedom to express himself. J Boog was put on a path to developing his own distinct reggae sound as a result of this diversity of musical influences coupled with Reggae's feel good vibe that was welcomed by the whole Afemata family. J Boog is staying loyal to his moniker. J Boog is presently living and traveling between Hawaii and California, and was nicknamed "Boog" by his brothers because he could never remain still for long. J Boog hasn't taken a vacation since his debut album, Hear Me Roar, was released in 2007. His tight work with island music pioneer George Fiji Veikoso, whom he met in 2005, was essential in the development of J Boog's distinct sound, as well as paving the path for many other Polynesian musicians. Another significant step in the production of J Boog's debut album was his affiliation with the Hawaii/San Francisco-based musical family, Wash House Music Inc. This partnership sent J Boog on a path that would keep him occupied while also influencing his follow-up record. J Boog collaborated with Yami Bolo and a member of reggae's royal family, Ambassador Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage, in 2008. He then went to Jamaica to learn about Jamaican reggae culture. J Boog did not anticipate to be working in such wonderful studios as Bob Marley's Tuff Gong Studio, Don Corlean's Hit Maker Studio, Bobby Digital's Digital B Studio, Shaggy's Big Yard Studio, and Sugar Minott's "Youth Man Promotions" on his first visit to Jamaica. J Boog was guided by Gramps Morgan and found himself surrounded by numerous musicians who had impacted him and would eventually appear on his follow-up album, "Backyard Boogie," in 2011. Backyard Boogie delighted a wide range of reggae enthusiasts and attracted new reggae followers from all over the world, with musical roots ranging from R&B to rock. J Boog returned to his signature feel-good, be-himself music. Backyard Boogie topped the Billboard charts in the United States and the iTunes charts in a number of other countries. Let's Do It Again", produced by the great Don Corleon, and Sunshine Girl", produced by Gramps Morgan/Dada-son and featuring Morgan Heritage lead man, Peetah Morgan, were among the highlighted songs. Backyard Boogie's popularity won J Boog the Best New Entertainer Award at the 2012 International Reggae and World Music Awards in Chicago. J Boog is a real music student. He is currently collaborating and recording, putting his music out there for people to enjoy in a variety of innovative ways. He released numerous singles in 2013 and 2014, both individually and cooperatively. In July 2013, he released the EP "Live Up!" on Washhouse Hawaii, which peaked at number 18 on the Top Heatseekers list and number four on the Top Reggae Albums chart. He has also collaborated on a mixtape of his songs titled "My Diamond Life" with fashionable powerhouse Diamond Supply Co. J Boog has performed in countries such as Europe, Africa, Dubai, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and Japan, to mention a few. His music is straightforward, and he believes that music is the sole global language. What sticks with his listeners, though, is his humility, his deeply ingrained dedication to his family and his proud culture.
