The Russian Bear, who was actually a Quebec native. In 1971, he used a knee drop off the turnbuckle to end Bruno Sammartino's 7-year reign. In 1970, Ivan Koloff joined the WWWF and battled Sammartino for the championship in Madison Square Garden. The next year, he won the belt. In 1972, he repeatedly challenged Verne Gagne for the AWA championship.
In 1975, he had several MSG main event battles against Sammartino.
