His grandpa, Irad Ortiz, as well as his uncle, Ivan Ortiz, and brother, Jose Ortiz, were all jockeys. Since arriving in the United States to ride, Ortiz has had a lot of success, including a ride in the Belmont Stakes in 2013 aboard Incognito, a Kiaran McLaughlin trainee who was taking a huge setup in class for the Triple Crown event.
