Ortiz, a native of Puerto Rico's Trujillo Alto, is a graduate of the country's Escuela Vocacional Hpica, a school for aspiring jockeys. His grandpa, Irad Ortiz, as well as his uncle, Ivan Ortiz, and brother, Jose Ortiz, were all jockeys.
Since arriving in the United States to ride, Ortiz has had a lot of success, including a ride in the Belmont Stakes in 2013 aboard Incognito, a Kiaran McLaughlin trainee who was taking a huge setup in class for the Triple Crown event.
