Ira Schwartz Biography

Ira K. Schwartz, M.D., is a pediatrician with an interest in infectious illnesses. Following his initial clinical education at Children's Memorial Hospital/Northwestern University Medical Center, he worked for the International Rescue Committee in rural Thailand before moving to Atlanta in 1981 to accept a position as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in the Division of Parasitic Diseases at the US Centers for Disease Control. He worked on the epidemiology of malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa for numerous years. After completing more clinical training at the University of Chicago, he and his family relocated to Kenya, where he worked at the Kenya Medical Research Institute in Nairobi from 1986 to 1988. He has been a member of the Emory University School of Medicine and the Rollins School of Public Health faculty since 1992. Dr. Schwartz heads the Southeast AIDS Training and Education Center (SEATEC), a federally sponsored regional AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC), and works at the Grady Infectious Disease Program to care for HIV-positive children. He is the Associate Dean for Medical Education and Student Affairs, as well as the Director of Admissions.
