Ira Byock, MD, is the Director of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, as well as a Dartmouth Medical School Professor of Anesthesiology and Community & Family Medicine. Dr. Byock has written several publications on hospice, palliative, and end-of-life care ethics and practice.
His first book, Dying Well, was published in 1997 and has since become a classic in the subject. His most recent book, The Four Things That Matter Most, was published in 2004 and is extensively utilized as a counseling tool in palliative care and hospice programs, as well as pastoral care. Dr.
