Ira Byock, MD, is the Director of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, as well as a Dartmouth Medical School Professor of Anesthesiology and Community & Family Medicine. Dr. Byock has written several publications on hospice, palliative, and end-of-life care ethics and practice. His first book, Dying Well, was published in 1997 and has since become a classic in the subject. His most recent book, The Four Things That Matter Most, was published in 2004 and is extensively utilized as a counseling tool in palliative care and hospice programs, as well as pastoral care. Dr. Byock has long been a champion for the rights and voices of dying patients and their families. He has received the Person of the Year Award (1995) from the National Hospice Organization, the Natalie Davis Spingarn Writers Award (2000) from the National Coalition of Cancer Survivorship, the Roger Bone Memorial Lecture Award (2003) from the American College of CHEST Physicians, and the Outstanding Colleague Award (2008) from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.
