Insane Clown Posse Biography

Insane Clown Posse is a comical metal/rap band with a well-known live act that includes open flames, chainsaws, and liters of soda thrown at the audience. They are known to place a greater focus on performance art than on musical performance. The Great Milenko, their 1997 album, was met with some controversy. ICP, now simply a pair, began in 1989 as a hardcore Detroit rap group named Inner City Posse. After the group disbanded in 1991, the only remaining members, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, slightly changed the name to reflect the fact that they had been visited by the Carnival Spirit, who instructed them to spread the word of the impending apocalypse by touring the country and releasing six joker cards, popularly known as LPs, with successive revelations of the final judgment. Carnival of Carnage was released in 1992 on their own Psychopathic Records label. Following the release of 1994's The Ringmaster, ICP gained some traction as a prospective follower of cartoon metal bands such as GWAR and Green Jelly. ICP had already gained prominence with the difficult release of the album, The Great Milenko. All of the exposure contributed to the group's cult following growing to the point that its second album, The Amazing Jeckel Brothers, debuted in the top five in 1999. ICP had become a virtual merchandising machine, complete with comic books to flesh out their complex dark carnival mythos, as shown by the several distinct collectable covers for The Amazing Jeckel Brothers. They also developed and starred in their own direct-to-video film, Big Money Hustlas, and appeared as guests at wrestling events. On Halloween 2000, the group released its sixth album, which reportedly did not count as a joker card (as all of the other albums had) (in the ICP fantasy world, the sixth joker card was supposed to signal the apocalypse). The album was published in two entirely distinct versions, Bizzar and Bizaar. Finally having to live up to the years of hype, 2002's The Wraith: Shangri-La revealed that their music's underlying message was always to follow God and make it to Heaven. Hell's Pit, the band's sixth and final joker card, was published in two versions in August 2004. In the spring of 2005, ICP teased a new path for the mythos, which would be unveiled with the May release of Calm.
