ILoveMakonnen Biography

Makonnen was born in Los Angeles and relocated to Atlanta as a 13-year-old in 2002. He is a multiracial guy with African, Indian, Irish, Belgian, German, and Chinese ancestors. Makonnen was inspired to start creating music by local rappers Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane when he was in high school. His early music was a mash-up of pop, rock, and hip-hop. Makonnen began writing songs on his computer and uploaded them on MySpace in 2008 and 2009. He met other up-and-coming performers on the internet, including Adele. Makonnen joined the Phantom Posse gang, and in January 2012, he met Atlanta producer Mike Will Made It, with whom he had a brief professional connection. Mike Will returned to Makonnen in March 2014 and took him to DTP Studios, where he performed some of his songs for producer Metro Boomin. Metro loved Makonnen right away and kept in touch with him. After recording six songs together, Metro enlisted the help of fellow Atlanta producers Sonny Digital and 808 Mafia, who were all blown away by him. Makonnen recorded Don't Sell Molly No More with Sonny Digital two days later, which would eventually help begin his career. Other Atlanta producers, including DJ Spinz and Dun Deal, were introduced to him by Sonny Digital. With songs like Living On The Southside, Sneaky Lady, and My New Friend, he began to acquire popularity in the neighborhood. The singer's self-titled EP ILoveMakonnen was released in July 2014, and it featured the tracks Club Goin' Up on a Tuesday and Don't Sell Molly No More. Miley Cyrus, a pop artist, received the latter and published it on Instagram. The post has received over 210,000 likes and counting, bringing Makonnen a large number of new admirers. Vice selected Makonnen's song Whip It in their Staff Picks for the Week list in August 2014, stating, "Makonnen's voice is amazing!" Listening to this tune, how could you not have a good time? Makonnen, my friend, is absolutely someone I trust to show me how to whip it. After hearing Club Goin' Up on a Tuesday in late August 2014, Drake contacted one of the song's producers, Sonny Digital, to request a remix. Makonnen agreed to email Drake the beat right away, but he didn't think much of it. However, to Makonnen's surprise, Drake released a remix to the song two days later. Later, the Atlanta singer said, "Yeah, I was startled." Shocking. Drake pays attention to Makonnen. It was fantastic. I was ecstatic. Surprised and astounded. I'm simply overwhelmed. Tuesday, the remix, went viral, resulting in heightened media interest in iLoveMakonnen. Makonnen was included in XXL's The Come Up section in late August 2014, which focuses on up-and-coming musicians. Makonnen joined Drake's OVO Sound label in September 2014.
