Makonnen was born in Los Angeles and relocated to Atlanta as a 13-year-old in 2002. He is a multiracial guy with African, Indian, Irish, Belgian, German, and Chinese ancestors. Makonnen was inspired to start creating music by local rappers Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane when he was in high school.
His early music was a mash-up of pop, rock, and hip-hop. Makonnen began writing songs on his computer and uploaded them on MySpace in 2008 and 2009. He met other up-and-coming performers on the internet, including Adele.
