Ilona Kickbusch Biography

Ilona Kickbusch is the Director of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. She was the director of the global health program at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, before returning to Europe. Professor Kickbusch had a remarkable career with the World Health Organization, having served at both the regional and global levels. He was the primary author of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, a fundamental text in public health. She pioneered the “settings” concept and launched programs such as Healthy Cities, health-promoting schools, health-promoting workplaces, health-promoting hospitals, and health-promoting jails. She was also the driving force behind WHO's Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) Study. She has made important contributions to the development of the idea of health literacy and, more recently, has pioneered the subject of global health diplomacy. Professor Kickbusch is regarded as a global pioneer in health in all policies (HIAP) approaches, having published and consulted widely on the subject. She recently completed a research on health governance for WHO/Europe and was heavily involved in the formulation of Health 2020, the European health policy framework. She is creating HIAP training materials for WHO and participated in the 2013 global HIAP conference in Finland. She also serves on the boards of the Careum Foundation and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics and is a member of a committee that advises on Portugal's future health (FIND). She has a long list of publications to her name and serves on a number of advisory boards in both academia and health policy. She has earned several honors.
