Ilan Zechory hails from Detroit, Michigan, and Malcolm X played a significant role in his early growth. Malcolm X's swagger and preachings may have inspired Ilan to major in religious studies at Yale University, where he met Tom and Mahbod for the first time.
His final thesis at Yale was on the Divine Religion of the Actual God, a study of a reclusive guy who founded his own religion (in some ways akin to Rap Genius) in the 1980s. Ilan wrote for HBO's Deadwood before embarking on his life's work on Rap Genius.
