Ichiro Kawachi Biography

Ichiro Kawachi, MB.ChB., Ph.D., is the John L. Loeb and Frances Lehman Loeb Professor of Social Epidemiology and the Chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Harvard School of Public Health. Kawachi earned his medical degree as well as his Ph.D. (in epidemiology) from the University of Otago in New Zealand. He has been a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health since 1992. Kawachi co-edited the first textbook on Social Epidemiology, published by Oxford University Press in 2000, with Lisa Berkman. Neighborhoods and Health, co-authored with Lisa Berkman; Globalization and Health, co-authored with Sara Wamala; Social Capital and Health, co-authored with S.V. Subramanian and Daniel Kim; the Oxford Handbook of Public Health Practice, co-authored with Charles Guest, Walter Ricciardi, and Iain Laing; Global Perspectives on Social Capital and Health, co-authored with Soshi Takao and S.V. Subramanian; and Behavioral Economics and Public Health His current NIH-funded R01 study examines the long-term effects of community social cohesion/social capital on functional recovery following the March 11, 2011 Great Eastern Japan earthquake and tsunami. In 2013, he offered a massive open online course (MOOC) called “Health and Society” (PHx 201) through HarvardX, with 32,000 people from all around the world registering. Kawachi co-edits the international journal Social Science & Medicine with S.V. Subramanian. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States.
