Hurricane Rubin Carter (May 6, 1937 – April 20, 2014) was an American middleweight boxer who was falsely convicted of murder and spent almost 20 years in jail before being released via a habeas corpus petition. Carter became a professional boxer after his release from jail in September 1961.
Carter was shorter than the normal middleweight at 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m), although he fought his whole professional career at 155–160 lb (70–72.6 kg). His aggressive approach and striking strength (which resulted in several early-round knockouts) gained notice, garnering him the moniker Hurricane and establishing him as a fan favorite.
