Hugh McElhenny, an All-America halfback at the University of Washington, began his football career by rewriting the Pacific Coast Conference record book. Hugh was a first-round draught pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 1952, and as a rookie, he made an immediate impression, sending sportswriters scrambling for fresh superlatives to characterize his electrifying style of play.
He had the longest run from scrimmage (89 yards), the largest punt return (94 yards), and the highest running average for the season (7.0 yards per carrying). He was a unanimous choice for Rookie of the Year honors in the league, which comes as no surprise.
