Hua Hsu is a writer, critic, academic, and staff writer at The New Yorker since 2017. Born to Taiwanese immigrant parents and raised in Plano, Texas, he graduated from UC Berkeley and earned a PhD in American Studies from Harvard. His debut book, “A Floating Chinaman: Fantasy and Failure Across the Pacific” (2016), explores Asian-American cultural fantasies and transpacific history. His Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir “Stay True” (2022) chronicles his unlikely college friendship with a conservative classmate, the friend's tragic murder, his grief, his identity, and his coming-of-age as an Asian American, earning the 2023 Pulitzer for Memoir or Autobiography. Hsu teaches English/Literature at Bard College, serves on the Asian American Writers' Workshop board, and hosts the podcast "Office Hours". His essays blend pop culture, race, music, and personal reflection with sharp insight.
