About Howie Dorough
Howie Dorough Biography
His mother (Paula Flores) is Puerto Rican, and his father (Hoke Dorough) is Irish American. He was born in Orlando, Florida. Howard Dorough had a desire to be in the entertainment industry since he was three years old, when he would climb on his grandparents' bed and sing Baby Face while playing his small guitar. Dorough got his start in show business at the age of six, when he performed in an Orlando production of The Wizard of Oz. This was only the first of a string of musicals he would play in the local Orlando scene. He was active in drama and choir throughout high school. He frequently rented out production equipment, having participated in and developed a program called Macho & Camacho during his high school years. Later, he auditioned for the Backstreet Boys, with whom he achieved international recognition alongside AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson, and Nick Carter. After the band's success, Dorough and the rest of the members were regulars on the covers of magazines such as Tiger Beat and 16 magazine. Caroline Dorough, Howie's sister, died of Lupus cancer in 1998. Following her death, Howie was instrumental in establishing The Dorough Lupus Foundation, with which he is currently active. His organization raises awareness about the condition, provides financial assistance to individuals who cannot afford treatment, and funds for research. Over half a million dollars have been raised so far to find a cure. He is presently involved with his girlfriend, Leigh Boniello, for two years. Howie, one of the Backstreet Boys' five contributing voices, is renowned for his high falsetto, which has usually been used in the background (e.g. I Want It That Way, the pre-chorus of Shape of My Heart and the endings of Spanish Eyes and Poster Girl). Howie has sang lead on various Backstreet Boys songs, the most prominent being Spanish Eyes from the Millennium album, as well as two songs he wrote: What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful) and How Did I Fall In Love With You, both of which he co-wrote with Brian Littrell (Black and Blue, 2000).
