Howard Hewett, one of the great pure vocalists of the urban contemporary age, has rarely found material worthy of his remarkable abilities. He grew up in Akron, Ohio, before moving to Los Angeles. Hewett sang on Soul Train before joining Shalamar with Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley in 1979.
Before Hewett left for a solo career in 1985, they had numerous huge successes. He signed with Elektra, and his second song, I'm for Real, reached number two on the R&B charts in 1986. Stay, the follow-up song, also charted in the Top Ten, while I Commit to Love peaked at number 12 in 1987.
