Hoobastank is an American rock band founded in 1994 in Agoura Hills, California, by Doug Robb, Dan Estrin, Chris Hesse, and Markku Lappalainen, the original bassist. While Tool and Alice in Chains' strong alternative sounds were key influences, Hoobastank softened the darker aspects of that music with a suburban California rhythm and a focus on accessibility.
When the bands self-published, stupidly titled They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To was released in 1998, it garnered tremendous local excitement, and the band quickly progressed from backyard concerts to shows all over the California coast.
