About Holger Hoock
Holger Hoock Biography
Holger Hoock is an eighteenth-century historian who specializes in the history of Britain and the British Empire. Scars of Independence: America's Violent Birth is his most recent book. Other novels he has written include The King's Artists and Empires of the Imagination. Hoock has been a Kluge Fellow at the Library of Congress, a Visiting Scholar at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Konstanz, as well as a Visiting Professor at his alma mater, the University of Freiburg. The Huntington, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the David Library of the American Revolution in the United States, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy in the United Kingdom, and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst and the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes in Germany have all supported Hoock's research. He is the Philip-Leverhulme-Prize winner for internationally known young researchers (2006). Holger's personal and professional path has brought him from Germany to the United Kingdom and the United States thus far. Holger grew up in Southwestern Germany near Heidelberg, attended the Universities of Freiburg (M.A., 1997), Cambridge, and Oxford (D.Phil. 2001), and taught at the Universities of Cambridge (2002–5) and Liverpool (2005–10), where he also founded the interdisciplinary Eighteenth-Century Worlds Research Centre. He accepted the J. Carroll Amundson Chair in British History at the University of Pittsburgh in 2010. Holger enjoys chances to help promote good research environments in addition to sharing his love for historical research as an author, educator, presenter, and consultant for museums and television. He is presently the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.
