Herb Thomas was born in the small town of Olivia, North Carolina, and worked as a farmer and at a sawmill in the 1940s before becoming interested in motor racing. Thomas raced in NASCAR's first Strictly Stock (forerunner to the contemporary Nextel Cup) event in 1949, making four starts in the series' first year.
The next year, he made 13 appearances in the series, which was renamed the Grand National Division, and won his first professional race in a self-owned Plymouth at Martinsville Speedway.
