Henry Hoby Wedler Biography

Henry “Hoby” Wedler a UC Davis doctoral student in chemistry spends long hours reading scientific material and running complex lab experiments. But the Petaluma native who is passionate about science will never actually see a chemical reaction. That’s because Wedler is blind.
Hoby Wedler was initially drawn to the impressive balance of small-town feel and academic rigor of UC Davis and he fell in love with organic chemistry as an undergraduate student. But the logistics of a career in a traditionally visually-oriented STEM (science technology engineering and mathematics) field were daunting; Wedler wondered if a career would be feasible. He wanted to be as independent as possible but the notion of practicing chemistry without a full-time assistant was dim. He decided to double major in 20th century history and to pursue that as his graduate work.
But then Wedler was introduced to chemistry professor Dean Tantillo by Tantillo’s colleague Jared Shaw from whom he was taking a class at the time. It was the connection and the boost that Wedler needed.
