Henry Armand Giroux was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on September 18, 1943, to Armand and Alice Giroux. In 1977, Giroux got his Doctorate from Carnegie-Mellon. From 1977 until 1983, he was a professor of education at Boston University.

In 1983, he was appointed professor of education and distinguished scholar in residence at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he also directed the Center for Education and Cultural Studies. He then proceeded to Penn State University, where he held the Waterbury Chair Professorship from 1992 to May 2004.
