Helen Thomas was born in Winchester, Kentucky, and reared in Detroit, Michigan, where she attended public schools and went on to Wayne State University. She worked as a copy worker for the old, now-defunct Washington Daily News after graduating from college. Helen Thomas joined the Washington Press Corps and United Press International in 1943.
Helen Thomas worked for UPI for 12 years, starting her work day at 5:30 a.m. She eventually covered federal government news, including the FBI and Capitol Hill.
